Population

 

Active population Part of population that is working.
Ageing population High proportion of people over 60.
Birth rate The number of births in a country in a year, per thousand people.
Death rate The number of deaths in a country in a year, per thousand people.
Declining Stage 5 of the DTM. Birth rate falls below death rate causing the total poulation to fall (in developed countries)
Demographic transition model (DTM) Graph that shows the changing birth rates, death rates and total population of the World over time in developed countries (MEDCs).
Dense population High population in a small area.
Early expanding Stage 2 of the DTM. Birth rate continues high but death rate starts to fall causing a rise in total population. High natural increase.
Economic migrant Migrants who move for better jobs, housing or standard of living.
Elderly dependents Part of population that is retired.
Emigrant Person leaving a country.
Emigration Migration leaving a country.
Family planning Teaching people about birth control.
Forced migration The forced movement of people from one area to another due to famine, drought or war.
High stationary Stage 1 of the DTM. High death and birth rate, low total population. Low natural increase.
Immigant Person entering a country.
Immigration Migration entering in a country.
Infant mortality The amount of children under 5 who die.
Internal migration Migration within a country.
Late expanding Stage 3 of the DTM. Death rate continues to fall, birth rate also starts to fall, but is still higher than death rate so total population continues growing. Moderate natural increase.
Low stationary Stage 4 of the DTM. Total population is now high but death rate and birth rate are low causing the total population to level-off. Low natural increase.
Migration The movement of people from one area to another.
Natural increase The birth rate minus the death rate.
Net migration Emigration - Inmigration = Net Migration
Permanent migration When migrants move forever.
Population explosion Where the population has increased dramatically from 1 billion in 1800 to 6 billion in 2000
Population growth rate It's the number of people added to a population each year due to natural increase and net migration. It's given as a percentage.
